Oncology
No clinical area in the Alexian Brothers Hospital Network better exemplifies the Alexian Brothers’ centuries-old commitment to a patient’s complete physical, mental, and spiritual well being than The Cancer Institute. Its more than 70 physicians, nurses, and staff ensure that patients receive the very best medical services available: from early detection to treatment, aftercare, and lifelong follow-up.
With every passing year, The Cancer Institute continues to handle one of the highest volumes of cancer cases in the region—an expected number of 1,800 newly diagnosed cases this year—and it remains the area’s leader in early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. The Cancer Institute’s presence is on both the acute care hospital campuses: Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village and St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, whereby the most effective diagnostic technologies are available.
While providing the personal attention characteristic of community-based healthcare, The Cancer Institute also houses one of the area’s largest oncology research programs, and participates actively in national cooperative protocols. It is the only cancer center associated with a community hospital in the Northwest Suburbs with gynecologic oncology group protocols. The Oncology Research Department includes physicians form Medical Oncology, Surgery, Radiation Oncology, and Pathology, and representatives from Nursing. A Medical Oncology Director with nine Principal Investigators, four Research Nurse Coordinators, and an Investigational Drug Pharmacist heads the Research Department.
The Cancer Institute’s Life Enrichment Center is 100% subsidized by the Alexian Brothers. The Life Enrichment Center was created to help families cope with a cancer diagnosis, and houses a library with Internet access and touch-sensitive screens that provide information from the National Cancer Institute, a boutique that caters to patients’ cosmetic needs, massage therapy, fitness programs, pastoral care, nutritional counseling, home health and special events and community conferences that cater to the cancer survivors and their families.
