Alexian Brothers has long been a leader in pediatric medicine and in investing in comprehensive pediatric services. The Health System has been first to offer many services that have transformed the medical experience for children and their families: first to have in-house pediatricians 24/7; first Pediatric Intensive Care unit in our service area; first to have Child-Life Therapists; and first to have all private pediatric rooms. Families have responded to Alexian Brothers leadership in caring for children – the hospital system has the largest market share in our core services area, caring for 36.4% of pediatric cases. In 2010 Alexian Brothers cared for over 48,000 children: 16,000 in our emergency rooms and immediate care centers; 25,000 through our inpatient and outpatient cases, 2,500 at the Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital; over 300 at the Alexian Brothers Center for Mental Health; and almost 6,000 deliveries, more than any other hospital in the region.
Alexian Brothers is also a leader in pediatric sub-specialties. Today it provides all pediatric sub-specialties including: anesthesiology, development/behavioral health, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hopitalists (specially trained doctors who help children with possibly frightening medical treatments), genetics, infectious disease, nephrology, neonatology, neurology and ophthalmology. A partnership with Loyola University Medical Center also enables Alexian Brothers to also deliver hematology/oncology care for children.
It is also the only provider of pediatric surgery in the area, and supports the one of the only certified Level III NICU (Neonatal intensive care unit) in the region, enabling critically ill children and infants to receive specialized care from pediatric experts close to home. Responding to the increasing need for such services in our area, Alexian Brothers recently established the Autism Spectrum and Developmental Disorders Resource Center, where families can be guided by a clinical expert through the myriad resources and pediatric specialties that can help affected children and their families.
Drawing on Alexian Brothers’ other areas of excellence, such as the Center for Pediatric Brain and the Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital, our doctors provide children with complex diagnoses holistic, state-of-the-art, and integrated care through the neurosciences, brain research, developmental pediatrics, psychiatry, and behavioral health programs.
